Your BPO is not your partner. And that might be your fault.

I’ve spent years sitting between companies looking for outsourcing solutions and the BPOs expected to deliver them.

And I’ve noticed something uncomfortable:

Companies often say they want a “strategic partner.”
But then they buy outsourcing like they’re buying electricity.
They compare hourly rates.
They negotiate every last dollar.
They demand flexibility.

They expect the BPO to absorb forecasting mistakes, hiring surprises, volume fluctuations, technology changes and last-minute decisions.

And then, six months later, they ask:

“Why doesn’t our BPO think strategically?”

Maybe because we never gave them a reason to. Outsourcing isn't a vending machine. You don't put money in one side and expect perfect customer experiences to come out the other. The best outsourcing relationships I’ve seen are built differently. The client brings transparency. The BPO brings expertise. The client shares the business problem, not just the number of seats. The BPO challenges assumptions instead of simply saying yes. Both sides accept that the operation will evolve.

This is one reason I believe having access to different delivery markets matters.El Salvador can offer proximity, cultural alignment and strong bilingual capabilities.

The Philippines brings enormous scale and a deeply mature outsourcing ecosystem. Bangladesh continues to develop an increasingly capable technology and services workforce.

But here's the part many companies miss:

The country doesn't create the partnership. The relationship does.

As a broker, my job isn't simply to find someone who can answer the phones for less. It's to understand what the client is actually trying to accomplish, and then find the environment where that objective has the best chance of succeeding.

Sometimes that's El Salvador. Sometimes it's the Philippines.Sometimes it's Bangladesh. And sometimes the smartest answer is a combination of them.

The biggest outsourcing mistake isn't choosing the wrong country. It's choosing a provider before understanding what kind of partner your business actually needs.

Maybe the future of outsourcing isn't about finding the best BPO.Maybe it's about building the right ecosystem around your business.

That's a very different conversation. And it's the one I prefer to have.
